The Summer’s Gift
Well, here we have arrived at the next to last day of August and we have had a month of delightful summer weather. Perhaps not in the opinion of people who are not long-time residents of the Southwest, but for those of us who are it has been much appreciated.
As I mentioned in my first blog on this topic at the beginning of the month, it was unusual and most amazing given last summer. I predicted it would not last, but I am happy to report that last it has!!
My normal summer routine of heading out on the dog walk no later than 6:30 and in summers past getting out by 5:30 have been but a memory. We have strolled out after 7 a.m. on a few mornings and have been met with the same cool breeze and comfortable walking temperatures. This morning required no towel to mop up sweat upon arriving home. Neighbors have stopped to visit rather than the usual quick wave and on our way to get home before it is too hot.
Such a gift!!
For my part, I simply held onto the joy I found in each day of palatable weather. Even when a fellow walker mentioned the surprising coolness, I would say, “Hasn’t the whole month of August been a delight?!!” I have gotten one or two to nod begrudgingly in my direction, but the majority have begun to point out my folly and then had to stop and contemplate my cheeriness.
The practice of finding the good rather than the difficult has actually been paying off. There is more pep in my step and more joy in each day. It is easy to focus on the ”what is not working.” There is more challenge in looking for the fun nuggets, but as with all panning for gold, the effort pays off.
Onward to September and all the wonders it holds.
